THE WOODEN BOAT ASSOCIATION
Victorian Division
FORMED in May 1989, by
people who like to combine the exercising of skills in woodwork with the
pleasure of boats and boating, the Wooden Boat Association has a national
membership in excess of 600, and is growing steadily. Membership
is distributed Australia wide with branches in NSW, Queensland, Nth Queensland,
South Australia, Tasmania, and our Gippsland branch based in Paynesville.
Members are engaged in all aspects
of boat construction and restoration, from large yachts and couta boats
to the smallest canoes, wooden powerboats, including radio controlled model
craft. The Model Radio Sailboat Group joined the Association in 1997 and
has added further variety to our Club's activities.
Many members do not own boats, but
enjoy the WBA functions as a chance to develop their skills and knowledge,
to met like minded people and try out other boats and as a forum to enjoy
their interests - whether in the materials, history construction, or use
of wooden boats. The Victorian WBA sails regularly on the Third Sunday
of each month on Albert Park Lake. We also sail at other locations throughout
Victoria, including activities with the members of the Gippsland branch.
Monthly club nights are also held on the Third Wednesday of the month usually
at the Albert Park Yacht Club.
Benefits of Membership.
The WBA of Victoria keeps in touch through
two publications - 'Watercraft', the national quarterly journal
with a wide variety of contributions covering many of the interests that
members have expressed, and the monthly newsletter, 'Shavings',
which is published in Melbourne.
Members are kept informed of future
events they may wish to attend as well as reports on activities under way
or recently past through the publication as well as information on the
development of the WBA and members experiences, technical topics, product
information and other matters of interest.
WBA of Victoria Library.
The WBA of Victoria has a large collection of books, periodicals and videos,
available for members to browse and borrow. Located in our meeting room at the
Albert Park Yacht Club, our library is open during our sailing days and club
nights. A searchable
catalogue of the library is available here.
