THE WOODEN BOAT ASSOCIATION of
CAIRNS
In
1876, SS Leichhardt rammed the
mangroves of Trinity Inlet, establishing Australia’s most northerly
seaport. One century later, Cairns became the trading hub
of the south east Pacific Rim, boasting some of the world’s most scenic and safest cruising waters
inside the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is the centre for a
diversity of local cultures and maritime industries from Hinchinbrook to Torres Islands contributing to the
rich heritage on this region. Today Cairns is an international
tourist destination and still remains a major shipping port.
WBAC
was formed in 1999 for the promotion, appreciation and enjoyment of wooden
boating in Far North Queensland. Membership is open to anyone with an “interest”
in wooden boats. From canoes to schooners, construction to cruising or just “chin-wagging” around real boats, participation at any level is
welcome and encouraged.
WBAC
has a broad and active membership base consisting of both professional and
amateur enthusiasts eager to share skills, exchange information and promote all
aspects of wooden boating as a pleasurable pastime. The Association organises a
variety of displays, workshops, sailing regattas, social and community events.
Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month
at WBAC Clubhouse, 119 Lyons St, Westcourt, and are open to new and
prospective members.
“Ratlines”
WBAC’s bi-monthly newsletter contains local information and events, current
construction projects, new and re-launchings, history and heritage, member
stories, classifieds etc and is circulated to some of the most remote areas of
Northern Australia.
WBAC is
currently establishing a home base, for interactive displays, reference and
tuition centre and a congenial meeting place for all lovers of wooden boats.
