Welcome to the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland!
We are an association of enthusiasts with a shared passion for wooden boats. Within that general definition our members represent a broad range of boats and special interests encompassing -
- Boats ranging from 100 years old to those barely begun.
- Boats powered by sail, steam, diesel, oars or paddles.
- Ultra-light canoes and kayaks thru putt-putts, trailer sailers, thru to large boats on permanent moorings.
- Both new constructions and restorations.
- Construction techniques including Stitch & Glue, Strip Plank, Lap-strake Ply, Traditional Clinker.
Our members variously enjoy designing, building, sailing, messing about in and talking about wooden boats. We welcome all current and potential wooden boat enthusiasts to our association. Our subscription is inexpensive, our activities are varied and interesting, and our culture is open, friendly and inclusive.
The main aims of the WBAQ are:
To foster and promote an active interest in all matters relating to the history, development and future, and the building, restoration and preservation of wooden boats in Queensland;
To encourage and promote contact with interstate and overseas organizations with similar interests;

On the second Tuesday of each month we have an informal, friendly meeting at the Maritime Museum of Queensland. This commences with a barbecue ($10 per head) which is a great opportunity to seek out advice, recruit volunteers, find out what's going on, or just 'chew the fat'.
Suggested arrival time is about 5:30pm for the barbecue serving from about 5:45pm. The meeting starts at about 7:00pm.
The WBAQ maintains an extensive library under the custody of librarian Mac Finch. The library contains books on a wide range of subjects related to the design, building and use of wooden boats; boating in general; and other related topics. There is also a wide range of magazines including WoodenBoat, Classic Boat, and many others. A limited number of subjects are available on CDs or DVDs. Library items may be borrowed by members at monthly meetings. A record is kept of borrowings, and members are expected to return them within a reasonable time of one to two months. A list of books contained in the WBAQ library is available here.
Our 'messabouts' sub-committee organises regular events 'on the water' in a range of locations to suit a wide variety of different boats. These are held on Moreton Bay, Brisbane River, Lake Cootharaba or other lakes and creeks around Brisbane.
As an association we participate on various regattas and other events organised by other groups. These typically include Bribie Island, Caloundra, Tweed Heads, Flinders Day (Coochiemudlo).
We participate regularly in a range of shows and exhibitions. Examples inclde: The Working With Wood show, the Brisbane Boat Show, WOODEN BOATS @MARITIME MUSEUM , a major event organised in collaboration with the Maritime Museum in which WBAQ members will bring their boats for public display in the museum grounds. See our calendar for details.
